What Causes Hip Pain?

Hip pain is caused by a variety of factors which may occur suddenly from an injury or gradually over time. Younger patients will tend to seek physical therapy for problems like muscle strains, sprains of ligaments, muscle imbalances, and labral tears that occur with injuries. Bursitis is another common cause of hip pain, which causes inflammation and pain on the outside of the hip. Hip impingement is from the top of the femur (thigh bone) hitting edges of the hip socket and is a common cause of pain across the groin. Other age related causes of hip pain include Arthritis, poor balance of hip muscles causing dysfunction, or a hip fracture. Hip Arthritis causes groin pain similar to impingement but has a worse prognosis in that patients may require a hip replacement.

Hip Pain Exercises

The main goal of seeing a physical therapist for your hip is to ensure that the joints, muscles, and ligaments are in good balance in terms of strength and flexibility. The approach of therapy will vary depending on your examination and situation but will likely include exercises to gain range of motion in your muscles and in the hip joint itself, strengthening weak muscles in the hips, and addressing any related problems in the low back, knees, or ankles.

Find the Right Solutions for Hip Pain

The solution for your hip pain will vary for your situation. You may have a team working with you including specializing physicians along with a physical therapist. In some cases, you may need surgery and will likely have physical therapy following. No matter the cause of your hip pain, our physical therapists in the Oklahoma City and Edmond area will help you achieve the strength and mobility it takes to get you back to your normal routine.
