Dr. Kaitlyn Cotton Discusses Recumbent Bikes with Women’s Health

Recumbent bikes are stationary bikes with a seated design and supportive backrests that make low-impact exercise comfortable. Low-impact exercise refers to activities that are gentle on the joints, making them ideal for individuals with joint issues or those recovering from injuries. The laidback design of recumbent bikes is easier on your back and joints but still allows users to get their heart rate up, as Dr. Kaitlyn Cotton, PT, DPT, WCS, a physical therapist at our Elk City Clinic, explained to Women’s Health.

What are the Benefits of Recumbent Bikes?

  • There is less impact on the joints than a treadmill, walking, or jogging.
  • Improve range of motion and mobility of joints.
  • All age ranges can use it.
  • It can be used for a wide variety of diagnoses.

“These bikes might be most beneficial for people who are looking to get some cardio in but are needing something low impact that does not stress their joints too much,” explained Dr. Cotton.

They’re also designed with comfort in mind, making them an excellent option for those looking for low-impact exercise or recovering from an injury.

“Recumbent bikes are designed with comfort in mind. They typically have a chair like seat that is often more comfortable than an upright bike. This also allows improved balance and control over one’s own body while riding,” said Dr. Cotton. “They are also designed to reduce strain on the body featuring a more reclined position.” Additionally, they have handles on the side that allow for additional support.

What Resistance Range is Best?

When it comes to resistance, there’s no one-size-fits-all option. “A resistance range for a recumbent bike is going to depend on the goal you have for the exercise. If your goal is to get a good cardiovascular workout in for endurance, then you are going to want to aim for a lower resistance but will plan to ride for a longer period,” said Dr. Cotton. “If the goal of the exercise is for strength and muscle training, then you will want to aim for a higher resistance and a shorter amount of time.  Resistance and time on a bike should also always be guided by your current physical condition, and you should monitor yourself for abnormal symptoms with exercise, including shortness of breath, chest pain, etc.”
