Dr. Devin Trachman Discusses Improving Your Balance with Eat This, Not That!

Good balance is vital for all age groups but especially crucial for those over 65 as it helps prevent falls – the primary source of injury as you age. “Being unable to balance increases seniors’ risk of falling, which can lead to more serious health issues such as head traumas, hip fractures, rib fractures, and other broken bones,” explained Dr. Devin Trachman, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, Clinic Director of Physical Therapy Central’s West Edmond Clinic, to Eat This, Not That!. Dr. Trachman advises incorporating walking into your daily routine to keep you healthy, balanced, and living longer. It’s important to be aware of your balance and take steps to maintain it, as it is a key factor in your overall health and well-being.

“Gone are the times when professionals recommended 10,000 steps every day. Now, experts say you can reap all the benefits you need from walking 7,500 steps [daily],” explains Dr. Trachman. “That can be three to five 10-minute walks a day. The speed doesn’t matter; it’s just the count of the steps. By meeting this goal, seniors can reduce their [mortality risk], improve cardiovascular health, lower cholesterol, improve cognition, and prevent muscle loss in the legs.” This simple yet effective advice can empower seniors and their caregivers with the knowledge they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
